New study: extract from cannabis has drastic effect on brain cancer

Experts have shown that certain substances from cannabis can be used to stop the growth of tumors. Specialists of the St. George's University of London have studied the treatment of brain cancer in a laboratory and discovered that treatment with cannabinoids is most effective.

During the research into brain cancer, two specific cannabinoids were tested: tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Every year, 5,200 people die from this form of cancer. The percentage of patients that is still alive five years after diagnosis is only 10 percent.

Cannabinoids are the active ingredients of cannabis and are also called phytocannabinoids. The cannabis plant has 85 different cannabinoids. This is the first study demonstrating the drastic effect of THC and CBD in combination with radiotherapy. The growth of tumors in the brain of mice was dramatically reduced the moment THC and CBD were used.

Some mice were treated with cannabinoids only, other mice were treated with radiotherapy only, and a third group of mice was treated with both cannabinoids and radiotherapy. The latter treatment was found to be most effective, according to lead researcher Dr. Wai Liu. In some cases, the tumors disappeared completely.

“The benefits of the cannabis plant are already known, but the drastic effect on brain cancer in combination with radiotherapy is new to us,” Liu said. The research team is now focusing on a clinical research involving humans. The study is published in the journal Molecular Cancer Therapeutics.
