Study Indicates CBD May Prevent Cigarette Smoke from Causing Cancer

By now, most people have accepted the fact that smoking cigarettes can be detrimental for health and wellness. In fact, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that cigarettes cause over 160,000 deaths each year. This connection is believed to be due to the CYP1A1 (cytochrome P450, family 1, member A1) protein.

The CYP1A1 protein is found in humans, and in small concentrations, it is perfectly harmless. Unfortunately, a 1993 study found that high levels of the protein in the human body were related to cancer. CYP1A1 is thought to create what is known as the “ultimate carcinogen”: BP-7, 8-dihyrdrodial-9, 10-epoxide. The more CYP1A1 that is found in the body, the more likely this cancer-causing compound will also be produced.

Cannabidiol (CBD) Derivatives Tested by Researchers

Significant research has been conducted in the last five years regarding the use of cannabidiol (CBD) as a way to inhibit the CYP1A1 protein. A 2013 study researched whether the CBD structure affected CYP1A1 from rising to dangerous levels. Researchers examined a variety of related structures to determine if one CBD structure had more of an effect on CYP1A1 levels than others.

The first structure that was examined was olivetol, an organic compound related to cannabigerolic acid, or CBGA. This compound is thought to be the mother of cannabichromene (CBC), THC, and CBD. While olivetol did inhibit CYP1A1 to an extent, it did not show the same effectiveness as CBD.

Next, researchers examined the derivatives of CBD, as a variety of other cannabinoids are formed as CBD degrades. CBD-2′, 6′-dimethyl ether and CBDM are prime examples of these derivatives. When researchers examined these cannabinoids, it was found that they also inhibited levels of CYP1A1, although neither showed the same efficiency as CBD.

After investigating all of the various cannabidiol parts, researchers determined that the best results are found when it is used as a whole. The derivatives did show some promise in limiting CYP1A1 development, but better results were achieved when whole CBD was used. The same results are achieved when an entire cannabis plant is used, as well, as the cannabinoids appear to work together in order to provide the best results.

The results of this study indicate that treatment using cannabidiol can be an effective way to prevent the development of cancer if a person insists on smoking cigarettes. When detected in high concentrations, CYP1A1 is related to cancer, and continued smoking can cause these levels to rise. Researchers have found that using whole structures of CBD can be an effective way to keep these protein levels stable and in check.
